Minecraft /tp Command
Teleports entities (players, mobs, vehicles) to specific coordinates, another entity, or across relative offsets with optional rotation angles.
Version Compatibility
Command Syntax
/tp <targets> <destination> | /tp <targets> <x> <y> <z> [<yRot> <xRot>]Arguments Explained
targetsSelector / Player NameRequiredThe entity or entities to teleport (e.g. @s, @p, @a[team=red], @e[type=horse]).
destinationSelector / Player NameThe destination entity to teleport targets directly to.
x y zCoordinatesDestination coordinate grid. Supports absolute (100 64 -200), relative (~ ~5 ~), or local caret (^ ^ ^2) coordinates.
yRot xRotRotation (Degrees)Optional facing rotation. yRot is horizontal yaw (-180 to 180), xRot is vertical pitch (-90 straight up to 90 straight down).
Practical Examples
/tp @s 100 64 -250Teleports yourself to absolute world coordinates X=100, Y=64, Z=-250.
Standard waypoint navigation.
/tp @s ~ ~5 ~Teleports yourself 5 blocks straight up from your current position.
Great for getting unstuck or surveying surrounding terrain.
/tp @a 0 100 0 0 0Teleports all online players to world spawn, facing due South with a level horizon.
Setting precise spawn orientation for servers and lobbies.
/tp @e[type=item,distance=..15] @sTeleports all dropped item entities within 15 blocks directly into your position.
Instant item vacuum for mining pits or mob farm drops.
/tp @s ^ ^ ^5Teleports yourself exactly 5 blocks in the direction you are currently looking.
Local caret coordinates (^) move relative to player crosshair view.
Common Mistakes
Mistake:
Forgetting the tilde ~ in relative coordinates, accidentally teleporting to absolute Y=5 (the bedrock layer void)
Fix:
Always prepend relative coordinates with ~: /tp @s ~ ~5 ~ (not /tp @s 0 5 0)
Mistake:
Teleporting into unloaded chunks, causing temporary client freezing or suffocation in blocks
Fix:
Ensure chunks are loaded with /forceload add or verify safe landing coordinates first.
Mistake:
Attempting cross-dimension teleportation directly with /tp
Fix:
Standard /tp cannot switch dimensions. In Java, use: /execute in minecraft:the_nether run tp @s 0 64 0
Java vs Bedrock Differences
Both editions support coordinate grids, relative tildes, and entity targets. Java Edition supports additional facing arguments like "facing <target>" or "facing <x y z>" directly in /teleport.
Command Block Usage & Automation
In Command Blocks, never rely on @s because the block itself cannot be moved as a player. Use @p for player-triggered teleporters (e.g. stepping on a pressure plate), or @a[distance=..3] for walk-in portal cuboids. For spawn or lobby warp pads, always supply rotation angles (e.g. "/tp @p 100 65 -50 90 0") so players land facing forward rather than staring at a blank wall.
Useful Tips
Press F3 in Java Edition to view exact decimal coordinates and facing angles.
In Bedrock Edition, toggle "Show Coordinates" in World Settings for always-on HUD coordinates.
Use local coordinates (/tp @s ^ ^ ^3) to dash forward through barriers or test raycast mechanics.
Important Notes
In Java Edition, `/teleport` and `/tp` are interchangeable aliases. You can append `facing <entity|pos>` in Java 1.13+ to orient the teleported entity toward a focal point instead of specifying yaw and pitch degrees.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I teleport between dimensions like Overworld and Nether?
Standard /tp cannot switch dimensions by itself. In Java Edition, chain it with execute: /execute in minecraft:the_nether run tp @s 0 64 0
What is the difference between /tp and /teleport?
They are aliases for the same underlying command engine. Both work identically across Java and Bedrock.
Can I teleport a horse or vehicle with me?
If you are riding a mob, running /tp on yourself teleports both you and your mount in modern Minecraft.
